Courtside Convos with Arturo Coello: The Mind Behind the Match

When you step onto the court with world number one Arturo Coello, it’s easy to be dazzled by the power, precision and poise that define his game. But talk to him for even a few minutes, and it becomes clear that what truly sets him apart isn’t just his athletic ability - it’s his mind.

As Padel continues to surge in popularity across the world, Coello’s visit to Padel Social Club marked a milestone - our first time welcoming the world number one to our courts and, as far as we know, his first ever appearance at a UK club. Between training sessions and photo opportunities, he sat down with us to share his thoughts on mental focus, competition and the evolution of the sport.

The Difference is in the Mind

“What separates a top-10 player from the world number one?” we asked.

“The level on the court is maybe the same,” Coello reflected, “but the mentality is different - especially in the important moments. It’s so difficult to stay focused throughout an entire tournament, and that’s what makes the biggest difference.”

It’s a reminder that at the sport’s highest levels, winning isn’t just about skill - it’s about the ability to stay composed when everything is on the line.

For Coello, that mental discipline is built both on and off the court. “Everyone sees the physical training, but for me, the most important value is in the mind. When you face a bad situation during a match, your mind has to stay relaxed and focused.”

Routine, Rhythm and Relaxation

When it comes to preparing for competition, Coello keeps it consistent. “I try to do the same things before every match,” he shared. “I get in my own space with music, stay relaxed and focus on what’s coming.”

And what’s on the playlist? A blend of intensity and rhythm - “Eminem and Drake,” he smiled.

Discipline extends beyond mindset too. “One of the most important things for me is diet,” Coello said. “I need to control what I eat because energy is everything. Before the match, it’s about giving yourself the right fuel to stay fully in the game.”

Growth, Rivals and the Rise of Padel

Coello’s competitive fire is constantly tested by the likes of Ale Galán and Fede Chingotto, players he calls his toughest opponents. “We play against them almost every week,” he said - and that ongoing rivalry pushes him to new heights.

But beyond the top of the rankings, Coello’s excitement lies in the sport’s global expansion. “Padel is growing around the world,” he said. “Here in the UK, I’ve seen a lot of new clubs and a lot of good people who love the sport. It’s a great moment for padel.”

And what’s next? “Maybe the Olympics,” Coello mused. “That would be an amazing challenge - the biggest competition in sport.”

Beyond the Court

Despite his relentless schedule, Coello knows when to switch off. “In the past, I’d spend a lot of time watching matches,” he admitted. “Now I try to focus on other things and relax.”

His dream doubles partner? “Agustín Tapia,” he said without hesitation. “Always.”

And the most underrated skill in padel? “The mind,” he smiled. “Always the mind.”

A Sport - and a Mindset - on the Rise

Hosting Arturo Coello at Padel Social Club wasn’t just a moment for our courts - it was a moment for the sport itself. As padel continues to expand globally, Coello embodies what it takes to rise to the very top: talent, yes, but above all, mental clarity and consistency.

Whether it’s pre-match rituals, mindful preparation or staying grounded amid global success, Coello’s approach reminds us that the real game often happens within.
