Courtside Convos with Jay Shetty: Gratitude, Growth, and the Power of Community

The Courtside Convos series returned with an inspiring guest: Jay Shetty - podcaster, bestselling author, and former monk whose work reaches millions worldwide. After a busy day of padel, we sat down with Jay to explore morning rituals, the balance between self-discipline and compassion, and why community matters both on and off the court.

Morning Mindset

For Jay, the day begins with intention.

“I try to avoid looking at my phone in the first ten minutes,” he explains. “Brush my teeth, shower - but the first thought of the day has to be a good one. I usually wake up and try to think of something I’m grateful for.”

It’s a practice rooted in mindfulness, one that sets the tone for the rest of the day.

Lessons from the World’s Top Performers

Having spoken with some of the most accomplished people in business, entertainment, and sport, Jay notices two qualities they share:

“They hold themselves to higher standards than anyone else - but they also show themselves high grace. If it doesn’t go well, they practice compassion and empathy for themselves. We all need that balance: Can I be kind to myself, and can I also push myself?”

It’s this duality - avoiding both complacency and harsh self-criticism - that Jay believes unlocks real growth.

Rest and Recovery

So what does someone so focused on mindset do to recharge after a long day?

“For me, it’s about switching off. Just being alone, meditating, calming the nervous system. Maybe reading a book - though I’m always looking for new recommendations.”

Community on the Court

Padel has community built into its DNA, and Jay highlights this as one of the sport’s greatest gifts.

“A connected community is one where everyone feels welcome,” he reflects. “Today has been exactly that. No matter how good you are or not, you’re invited. You’re included. That’s what community is - creating space where everyone belongs, no matter their background.”

It’s this openness, Jay believes, that transforms a casual game into something far deeper.

Humility: The Underrated Trait

When asked about the most overlooked quality in a partner - on the court or in life - Jay doesn’t hesitate: humility.

“If you’re not humble, you can’t learn, you can’t grow, you can’t be better,” he says. “Groundedness is everything.”

A Love for Sport

Though Jay is best known for his insights on mindfulness and purpose, there’s another side to him: his passion for sport.

“I love football. I love padel. I love playing and watching both,” he admits with a grin. And yes - he’s a Manchester United supporter.

Final Thoughts

From gratitude practices to the importance of humility, Jay Shetty brings wisdom to both life and sport. His reflections on community echo the very spirit of Courtside Convos: connection, openness, and shared joy.

As the series continues at Padel Social Club, one thing is clear - the conversations off the court are just as powerful as the ones on it.
